Computing

At Winton we strive to make sure our pupils are masters of technology. We aim to develop ‘thinkers of the future’ through a broad, ambitious and relevant education in computing. Technology is all around us and will only become more prevelant over the coming years; therefore, it is imperative that our computing curriculum models and educates our pupils on how to use technology responsibly, safely and positively.

P0286 School Drivers CARINGCaring: With a world immersed in digital technology like never before, educating our children about their digital footprint, acting responsibly and safely online and thinking about the impact that our words have when using the internet are key to our children navigating today’s society.

P0286 School Drivers CONNECTConnections: Whilst there are huge opportunities to connect with each other using technology, computing offers our children the chance to connect with an almost unlimited amount of content and to in turn use it where appropriate to greatly enhance their learning.

P0286 School Drivers COMMCommunication:Whether it is publishing a piece of writing, composing an e-mail, programming code for a ‘sprite’ or communicating the importance of responsible behaviour online, we utilise a wide range of opportunities for our children to communicate effectively through computing.

P0286 School Drivers CURIOSCuriosity: With such a vast amount of information at our children’s fingertips through digital technology, encouraging them to be objective, curious and critical of what they come across is a key part of our computing curriculum.

At Winton Primary School our Computing Lead works closely with the Computing Lead Network in Islington. Therefore, we use Islington’s Computing Scheme of Work across our school partnership.

This computing scheme of work uses DFE funded Teach Computing, https://teachcomputing.org which has been customised for Islington schools to include relevant digital and learning resources. Our scheme of work is tailored to Winton Primary School by ensuring we have:

- Adopted the new DFE Funded Teach Computing Curriculum Structure

- Implemented an improved Progress Assessment framework and Portfolio Development approach (Seesaw + Google Classroom)

- Embed effective legacy of Remote Learning (Digital Skills of Children and Staff)

- Provide structured weekly lessons and progressive half termly units of work for all three strands of the computing curriculum

- Make explicit links and use localised Online Resources from LGFL, Inc. Busythings, J2E

- Maximise the best national and global open resources and computing pedagogy Inc. Phil Bagge, Barefoot Computing and Common Sense Media.

- A core computing curriculum which teaches children how to safely interact with technology in the Digital World.

In order to support out approach, from September 2023 we will have a team of Digital Leaders who support the computing curriculum in class as well as to look to innovate using new technologies, lead assemblies and create lessons and displays around the school.

Our Curriculum follows the 3 Stands of Computing:

Computer Science:

Digital Literacy

(and E-Safety):

Information Technology:

We aim to skill all pupils to be able to understand and access basic programming and computing skills. This starts with pupils using Beebots and leads to them understanding computing networks and using software like Scratch.

At Winton every Year Group learns an e-safety module per half-term. This ensures all pupils know how to be safe online at home and in school. This is an important part of living as digitally-connected citizens, in a society which regularly uses digital apps and resources. We also help to ensure our pupils know how to access digital media to keep pace with an ever-connected education space and workplace.

Information Technology is an important and integral part of modern society. We aim to skill our pupils to use word processors, create digital media, presentations and access digital publishing.
